Infertility (also called sterility) is the inability to get pregnant after, at least, a year of attempting. A female is not always to be blamed. In 30% of cases sterility is because of the female. In another 30% of cases, infertility is due to the man. The remaining cases are brought on by a combination of male and female factors or by unidentified factors. In most cases ovulation problems bring on sterility in females. Some signs that a female is not ovulating normally are irregular or absent menstrual periods. Other causes of fertility problems in females are blocked fallopian tubes due to pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, or surgery for an ectopic pregnancy, physical problems with the womb, uterine fibroids. A woman's ability to have a baby can be affected by many factors. They include age, stress, unbalanced diet, athletic training, being corpulent or underweight, smoking, alcohol abuse, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), well-being problems that damage the hormonal balance. At present more women get pregnant with the first child when they are in their 30s or 40s. Actually, about 20% of Americans are estimated to have their first baby after the age of 35. Thus, age is an increasingly common cause of reproduction problems. Almost 30% of couples where the woman is over 35 have conception problems. In males, hormonal imbalances, diseases, reproductive anatomy trauma and obstruction, as well as sexual dysfunction can temporarily or permanently adversely impact on sperm and conception. The longer some disorders are untreated, the fewer chances of recovery are. Smokers have a 13-17% lower sperm count that non-smokers. High alcohol intake can considerably lower the sperm count. Tight-fitting apparel and extended periods of sitting can result in a reduction in sperm count through undue heating of the testes. Marijuana, cocaine and anabolic steroids all decrease the sperm count and badly influence motility. Both males and females need specialist aid if they fail to conceive a child naturally.
