Sexual functioning can be adversely impacted on by many factors. Both psychological and physical factors trigger erectile dysfunction. It is thought that in 75% of cases there is a physical factor involved. Psychological factors that contribute to or cause erectile dysfunction are stress and anxiety, conflicts and dissatisfaction with a sexual partner, depression. Men with ED often suffer from the fear of poor sexual performance. Men who have experienced erection problems in the past worry about their sexual performance. This distracts from getting sexually aroused, thereby leading to erection problems. Among physical factors bringing on erection problems include diabetes, insufficient blood flow to the penis, penile nerve damage, endocrine imbalances, substance abuse including chain smoking, high cholesterol level and vascular disorders. However, whatever the causes are, men who have ED are commonly tense and feel guilty and powerless. There are only 3 oral therapies approved by the U.S. FDA to treat erectile dysfunction: Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra. The medications relax the penile walls allowing more blood to flow to the organ, so that when a man is sexually stimulated, he can get an erection. The drugs work by a similar mechanism to trigger an erection. There are some differences in how long and how rapidly the medication takes effect. Levitra works a little longer than Viagra. They both take effect in approximately 30 minutes. With Levitra, the effects last for about 5 hours, while the effects of Viagra for 4 hours. Cialis works a bit faster (within about 15 minutes), and the effects last a lot longer - up to 36 hours in some cases. Although each drug has proven efficient, none is cure-all. Besides, they can cause problems if interact with other medicines, particularly with nitrate or nitroglycerin cardiac medications, as well as trigger more general side effects, such as splitting headaches and - in the case of Viagra - blurred vision. Apart from drugs, there are other methods of treatments, such as mechanical therapies and surgery for severe cases of erectile dysfunction. The type of treatment, thus, depends upon the severity of ED.
